The two character types also fit in nicely with our gaming preferences. As someone who grew up playing old 8-bit and 16-bit games, I have a soft spot for classic co-op play and Darksiders Genesis allowed me to indulge in some hilarious gaming hijinks alongside my niece. By the way, I’d like to commend the developers for adding split-screen couch co-op instead of solely relying on online multiplayer.
You play the game by either picking between War or Strife when playing co-op or alternating between the two when playing solo. The result is a game that further fleshes out the Darksiders lore but also provides a different flavor from the series’ core experience. While the main titles focused on 3D action, however - albeit with key differences from game to game - Genesis goes all-in on the top-down, hack-and-slash style popularized by Blizzard’s Diablo series. This also means that Darksiders Genesis serves as a prequel to the mainline games.
Apparently, the Four Horsemen don’t get federally mandated vacation days. Storywise, Darksiders Genesis occurs right after the massacre of Eden, a key event in the game’s lore that involves War, Strife and fellow Four Horsemen Death and Fury essentially slaughtering their fellow Nephilim as part of a grand bargain with the council.
Three heads apparently aren’t any better than none. And then a totally dead demon lord after being introduced to Strife’s two high-caliber best buds, Mercy and Redemption. Who quickly turns into a two-headed demon lord. Strife’s irreverent attitude is evident in the opening cinematic where he meets a three-headed demon lord.
